Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

We have compiled the top eight frequently asked questions (FAQs) about our solar products. Find out more about lumens, lux, LED, cloudy conditions, waterproofness, IP ratings, lab tests and branding of our products.

1. What’s the difference between lumens and lux?

Lumens measure the total amount of light output from the source of a light, without taking into account how that output it used. Lux measures light intensity (brightness), taking an area into account where one lux is equal to one lumen per square meter.

2. How can I accurately compare lux and lumen measurements among products?

The lab tests will state which is being measured (lux or lumen) and from which distance. It is important to keep all variables equal when comparing products. We prefer to use lux as a standard for most of our solar lights because it captures solar run time, height and viewing angle which better emulates life.

3. What does LED stand for?

LED stands for Light-Emitting Diode. LEDs emit more lumens per watt than traditional light bulbs and have a longer useful life.

4. Do the products work in cloudy conditions or during monsoon season?

Yes, all Flexiway Solar Solutions products will be able to charge in overcast conditions. Some of the products, however, have more sensitive and/or powerful solar panels that work better in these conditions.

5. Are the products waterproof? Why does the instruction sheet say to keep the product out of the rain if the product is waterproof?

Flexiway Solar Solutions products are waterproof. We recommend, however, that you avoid keeping electronics unnecessarily exposed to the elements.

6. What is IP65? Is the IP65 rating certified by independent laboratories?

IP (Ingress Protection) marking defines the protection against contact and infiltration of water and dirt. In many environments, and especially in humanitarian and development settings, solar devices must withstand rough conditions and function well despite dirt, dust and humidity. An IP score consists of two numbers. The first number indicates the protection against solid objects and the second against liquids. IP65 therefore means:

6: Totally protected against dust.

5: Protected against low pressure jets of water from all directions – limited ingress.

Independent testing results: Our IP65 ratings are certified by labs that provide independent testing results. IP65 is a valuable achievement and internationally recognized quality standard. Please contact us if you would like to receive the details of the internationally recognized laboratories we are working with.

7. What is the shelf life of a charge if product is in storage?

The standard factory charge is 60 – 80%. How long this charge is held depends on the storage conditions, so a standard shelf life is indeterminate. The good news is with solar products is that you only need 6- 8 hours and a bit of sun to bring a product back to life!

8. Can branding be added to the products?

Yes, any logo can be added to the product line, only adding two days to production time. Also, the color of the casing can be changed. The original Flexiway color is white and was selected as the color that would reflect sunlight and absorb less heat.
